U.S. Services End Segregation

(Rec. 10 p.m.) WASHINGTON, July 5. The United States Army has virtually completed its programme or ending segregation of white and negro soldiers. s An Army spokesman said today that more than 98 per cent, of the Armys negroes were now integrated into white units. In 1946 the United States Navy ordered all berths in the Navy opened to negroes, and barred separation of sleeping or eating facilities. In 1949 the Air Force ordered segregation to end. The Army, which took small steps towards integration, starting with unsegregated training of officers at the outbreak of World War 11, began a real breakdown of its colour lines after the start of the Koresin war four years ago. /
