U.S. ATTITUDE TO CHINA
Moves To Prevent U.N. Admission
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyriffht) (Rec. 12.10 am.) NEW YORK, July 6. Senator William Knowland, the Repcader in the Senate, was reported today to have said that a SToop of Republican and Democratic senators was studying three possible courses of action to prevent the admission of Communist China to the United Nations.
• The New York Times” reported Senator Knowland as saying that the group was considering:— (1) The passage of a resolution asserting the belief of Congress that communist China’s entry would be the equivalent of appeasement.
(2) Putting a policy statement in the legislation for > foreign aid warning against continued United States support for the United Nations if Communist China was admitted. (3) Cutting off all funds for support of the United Nations if Communist China was admitted. Senator Knowland said that the group might take one or all of the courses.
We are not just going through a-lot of motions,” he said. “I have never been more serious—arfd those with me share my view—that the United must be put on notice that this is clearly a choice between Communist China and the United States.” Senator Knowland declared on June 29 that he would resign his party leadership in the Senate to advocate the withdrawal of the United States from the United Nations if Communist China was admitted to the United Nations.
His reported statement today was the first indication that he was leading a two-party group on this issue.
