HIGHER WAGES CLAIMED
LABOURERS ON COUNCIL WORK An increase in the basic rate of wages from £6 9s 8d to £7 a week is one of the claims made for labourers employed by the City Council Dy the Canterbury Builders’ and General Labourers’ Union. A special sub-com-mittee of the council will negotiate the new award. For Saturday work, including cleaning up at present paid for at time and a half, the claim is for time and a half for the first two hours and double time thereafter. Another claim is that payment for holidays, apart from Sundays, Christmas Day and Good Friday, be increased from time and a half to double time. A general increase •of dirt money, now varying from Is to 4s a day, by Is a day is sought, and better accommodation for workers and their bicycles is also sought.
