MOTOR DRIVERS’ LICENCES
RECORD ISSUE IN JUNE MANY STILL TO BE RENEWED June was a record month tor the issue of motor-drivers’ licences by the traffic department of the Christchurch City Council. The number issued was 12,062, compared with 6976 issued in June, 1945. Motor-drivers’ licences for 1945-46 expired yesterday, but nearly halt the city’s motorists nave not yet renewed their licences. The total issue in- the 1945-46 licensing period was 22,133 licences. The highest pre-war total was 17.593. The next fortnight will be almost as busy for the traffic department’s staff as the last month has been. The bulk of re-licensing is usually spread over June and the first -half of July, but whereas in pre-war years the total issue in this period was seldom more than 12,000, thi§ year it is expected to reach 17,000. By May of next it is believed the number of licenceholders in Christchurch will have risen to 25,000 or 27,000.
