SPEED OF BUSES
Sir, —ln reply to “Violation’s” letter regarding the speed of buses on the Papanui road, and asking for the Traffic Department’s assistance about it, I would like the traffic officer to keep an eye on all the cyclists who push their way past all traffic on the wrong side whilst awaiting for a stationary tram, and thread their way through the alighting passengers to be in the way of motor traffic when the tram does start. I’ll bet “Violation” would be one of the first offenders caught for this offence.—Yours, etc., PASSENGER. June 27, 1946.
Sir, —As a cyclist using Papanui road four times daily, I wish to protest against “Violation’s” tirade concerning the splendid drivers of the Midland buses. I have never seen anyone “crowded into the gutter,” and no careful cyclist would be. As for the excessive speed alleged by “Violations,” it is the instant acceleration practised by the bus drivers after stopping behind trams which allows other traffic to pass, and avoids the congestion often caused by the slowness of some private motorists. The traffic inspectors should give their attention to the hundreds of careless motorists and truck-drivers who stop and suddenly fling open their right-hand doors in the path of advancing cyclists and other traffic. One day I fear I shall succumb to temptation and administer a hearty kick to the inviting posterior offered as such a person proceeds to step out of his car.—Yours, etc., BEST ON THE ROAD. June 27, 1946.
