DISTRIBUTION OF FOOD GIFTS
Sir, —I would welcome information concerning the distribution .and destination of the-gifts of food being collected,- presumably for Britain. Is this food issued free to people in Britain and. if so, how do people there acquire it? My family have contributed quite a lot recently and also in the big appeal last year, but correspondents in Britain have heard nothing of it. In the event of sending individual food parcels direct to relatives, are they penalised in any way with theii* rations at Home or are food points confiscated in any way?—Yours, etc., INTERESTED DONOR.
June 27, 1946. [The distribution of food gifts sent to England through the Famine Emergency Committees in New Zealand was controlled by the Food Gifts Allocation Centre of the Ministry of Food in London, said Mr E. A. Chivers, secretary of the Christchurch Famine Emergency Committee. An endeavour was made to see that the most needy cases were met first. No charge was made and, so far as he knew, the recipient’s normal ratiohs were not affected.]
