DOONHOLME
GOOD PROSPECT FOR SELWYN HANDICAP
Doonholme will make her first appearance since being trained by M. Holmes, at Yaldhurst, in the Selwyn Handicap at Addington to-day. This aged daughter of Rey de Qro and Raclaim has not always raced solidly; but on her best behaviour she can pace fast, as she has proved by recording four wins and two minor placings in 23 starts this season. Her first win for the season was on a heavy track at the Gore Trotting Club’s meeting on Boxing>Day, where she won the second division of the Stewards’ Handicap by four lengths from Quite Certain, after breaking with two furlongs covered. At her next start, she finished third ter Stimulant and Loyal Boy in the Novice Handicap on a muddy track at the Winton Trotting Club’s meeting on December 29, and later in the afternoon paraded again to have an easy win over Janet Hall in the Improvers’ Handicap. Doonholme’s next six starts yielded one second placing, and she was then taken to the Invercargill Trotting Club’s meeting on March 2, where she led over the last mile to win the Visitors’ Handicap of one mile and five furlongs from Janet Hall and Understudy. Six unplaced performances followed, and Doonholme then made her appearance on May 4 at the Forbury Park Trotting Club’ meeting, where, on a track that was very heavy, she took the lead with five furlongs covered, winning with the greatest of ease by 10 lengths from Notus, with Convincer another 15 lengths away in third place. Doonholme has shown her best, form on heavy tracks, and as the Addington course has had a thorough soaking, this Rey de Oro mare should be seen to advantage. Jottings
Probable has shown improved form in recent months to win three races for K. E. Tarrant, who trains him at Temuka. He is a gelding by Maxegin from a Nelon Bingen mare. His last success was on a dead track at the Waikato meeting on May 4. ' Stimulant has won on a muddy track, and he should race well in the mile saddle event at Addington. Ena Parrish lost the lead when she broke at the end of two and a half furlongs in the Kawau Handicap at Auckland; but she settled down quickly, and was handy to the leaders with a mile covered. Once into the straight, she finished strongly to win by a nose from Little Hera. Volo’s Victory can handle heavy tracks, and he is a possibility at Addington today. Jervis Bay will be ridden by A. Fields in the Lightning Handicap. This Rey de Oro gelding has had a solid preparation. He may spring a surprise. Car Parks Not Available Because the heavy rain of the last two days has waterlogged the ground, the car parks at the Addington trotting grounds, apart from that reserved for members, will not be available to-day. The Chief City Traffic Inspector (Mr C. S. Nicholson) said yesterday that motorists would therefore have to park their vehicles wherever possible on streets Other than Lincoln road. Parking there would be prohibited, but the City Council’s traffic staff would do its best to direct motorists to available parking spaces as close as possible to the trotting ground. Withdrawn « Axworthy Star, which is- owned and trained by B. V. Tully, Lower Hutt, has been withdrawn from the Trial Handicap at Addington to-day. Favoured
Starshell raced well on a holding track at the Canterbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting on May 25 to win the Peninsula Handicap from Carisbrook and Checkmate. She should not be troubled by the heavy track at Addington, where she is engaged today in the Federal Handicap. Starshell has won two races this season, and she appeals as one of the brightest prospects in her class. At Hornby
W. D. Scott, who is training a team on the track previously used by J. Bryce at Hornby, has a team including Big Ben. Loyal Peg, a three-year-old gelding by Grattan Loyal from War Bride, and a two-year-old filly by Dillon Hall from Bonnie Barbara in work. Bred by Mr W. J. Morland, Riccarton, Bonnie Barbara is by Jack Potts from the Rey de Oro mare Barbara Worth, and she is already the dam of some speedy pacers in Karnak, Be] Hamed, and Town Talk. Loyal Peg is a five-year-old mare by Grattan Loyal from a Four Chimes mare, and when trained by O. Quinlan at Greymouth earlier in the season she suc% ceeded in beating Margaret Hall in the Cobden Handicap at Greymouth on Labour Day. She is a promising type, and may show up in the Improvers’ Handicap at Addington to-day. Has Been Fired
Cabin Boy’s legs have caused his ownertrainer, P. P. Gallagher, a lot of worry throughout his racing career, and in an endeavour to overcome the trouble this big son of Jack Potts and Sheila Fleetwood has been fired and turned crut for a spell. A brilliant pacer when at his best, Cabin Boy should have little difficulty in graduating to cup company if the treatment proves successful. Distance Should Suit
Lodestone was handy to the leaders until the straight was ,reached in the Lyndhurst Handicap at Ashburton; but he did not finish on as expected over the two miles, and was not in the first 10 to finish. Lodestone will make his next appearance in the Trial Handicap at the Cheviot Trotting Club’s meeting next week. He should race prominently over the mile and a quarter journey.
Now at Templeton The Grattan Loyal gelding, Cumnock, which was previously trained by his owner, R. S. C. Shaw, joined W. R. Butt’s steadily growing team after the Ashburton meeting. At his last start Cumnock finished third to Copper Trail and Wade Lane in the Acton Handicap at Ashburton on June 15, and on that performance he should race well in the. Federal Handicap at Addington to-day, where he will be bracketed with another good pacer in Stimulant.
Led All The Way Driven by his trainer, P. P. Gallagher, Veritas was first out and first home in the Winchmore Trot Handicap at the Ashburton Racing Club’s meeting on Saturday. When the field settled down he was followed by Moneymate, Great Show, Emondale, and Ace of Diamonds. The order was still the same as the straight was reached, where Veritas, although he appeared to be feeling the strain, responded to Gallagher’s vigorous driving to win by a length from Great Show, with Ace of Diamonds in third place. Veritas, which is owned by Mr P. Fahy, is a five-year-old gelding by Quite Sure from Colonna, which was bred at Yaldhurst by M. B. Edwards, and is by Author Dillon from Countess. Tired Badly After having a lead of about 20 lengths on the field in the Second Oneroa Handicap at Auckland on Saturday, Dan’s Triumph began to weaken, and with another two furlongs covered, Fly High, Laurie Bingen, and Pride were within striking distance of him. Once into the straight, Dan’s Triumph stopped badly, and he was beaten by a length by Fly High, which finished strongly. Dan’s Triumph covered his first mile in 2min 22sec, but he fell a victim to his own paceraaking, and took Imln 20sec to cover the last half-mile.
