UNEMPLOYMENT THREAT
RAW MATERIALS SHORT AT AUCKLAND
(P.A.) AUCKLAND, June 28. Hundreds of workers in Auckland factories are threatened with unemployment by the shortage of raw materials, according to the Auckland Manufacturers’ The most serious shortages are in pig iron, steel, cement, galvanised sheet iron, tinplate, and timber.
Because of shipping trouble? on the Australian coast, there was no 'pig iron at Port Kembla for the Union Steam Ship Company’s vessel Kairanga to pick up on her last trip and this .has accentuated the shortage. Iron, steel, and cement shortages could bfe overcome by sufficient shipping, according to the association Cement could be obtained in Australia. Lack of cement supplies for pre-cast concrete manufacturers was causing a serious shortage of fireplaces, tubs, chimneys, boiler frames, foundation blocks, building boards, and other items dtor housing, and use in ratal district*,
