TIME LOST IN MINES

COMMENT BY CHAIRMAN OF TAUPIRI COMPANY

(P.A.) AUCKLAND, June 27. The aggregate working timte lost through voluntary and unnecessary absences during the year was equivalent to the complete closing of the company’s mines for 334 working days, said Mr F. M. Winstone, chairman of Taupiri Coal Mines, Ltd., at the annual meeting of the company to-day. Because individuals tended to take a day off now and then, the cumulative effect tended to pass unnoticed, he said. The psychology of the miner was undoubtedly one of the prime factors in the failure of production to meet the community’s needs. In view of the men’s attitude it was doubtful whether any purpose was fulfilled by keeping the mines working on holidays and back Saturdays. Shorter hours and the increased rates paid for such days encouraged absenteeism on normal days, said Mr Winstone.
