POLISH TENNIS PLAYERS
OMISSION OF NAME OF COUNTRY
WIMBLEDON INCIDENT CLOSED
(Rec. 9 p.m.) LONDON, June 26. The chairman of the Wimbledon championships committee (Sir Louis Greig) referring to the omission from the programme of the initial P, indicating the country of the Polish-born players, C. Sphycalla and I. Tloczynski, said the omission had been a temporary measure pending clarification of a letter received by the Lawn Tennis Association from Polish official sources. It had now been fully explained and
the incident had been closed by the replacement of the initial. In spite of the official decision regarding the nationality of Tloczynski aqd Sphycalla, the withdrawal of Miss J. Jedrzejowska from the mixed doubles with Tloczynski will stand. The referee, Captain A. K. Trower, explained that Miss Jedrzejowska had received instructions from the Polish Ministry concerned that as Tloczynski and Sphycalla were not members of the Polish Lawn Tennis Association she could not play with them. A Wimbledon official on Tuesday said that the letter P which appeared after the names of Sphycalla and Tloczynski in Monday’s programme had been deleted as the result of representations “from Warsaw," but refused a further explanation. Sphycalla commented that as members of General Anders’s 2nd Corps which fought in Italy, he supposed that he and Tloczynski could be classed as men without a country. CHAMPIONSHIPS AT WIMBLEDON PAILS AND BROWN WIN SINGLES (Rec. 8.45 p.m.) LONDON, June 26. The Australians, D. Pails and G. Brown won their second round singles matches at Wimbledon with the greatest of ease, but two other Australians, H. Hopman and J. Harper, were defeated. The powerful driving of Pellizza, the French Davis Cup player, carried him through, against Hopman’s wiles, and the Dutchman,- van Swol’s cannon-ball service was the deciding factor in his win over Harper. While van Swol was eliminating Harper, the latter’s compatriot, Palis was returning the compliment with the Dutchman, Wilkin, who wa-, not good enough to extend the Australian. The United States players, J. Kramer and F. Segura, had very comfortable wins.
• The best match of the day was between the towering Frenchman, Petra and the Jugoslav Pallada. This game was marked by aggressive, exciting, and colourful play by both men, varying from ferocious aces to the gentlest drop shots. Pallada saved six match points before going down. Results:—
