UNIVERSITY REFORM

-—-4A FIVE-YEAR PLAN

CANTERBURY STUDENTS TO PREPARE REPORT

University reform on a five-year plan was recently advocated by the Chancellor of the University of New Zealand (the Hon. Mr Justice Smith) at the annual meeting of the Senate. Several sections at Canterbury University College, including the College Council, professorial Board, and the student body, have appointed committees to discuss the matter. A meeting of undergraduates and recent graduates has set up a committee which has divided its work into two parts. The first is the preparation of a report on university reform, under the following headings:—(a) entrance requirements, reform at stage 1, degree requirements; (b) research, research and teaching, training for research, research by staff, research schools; (c) scholarships; (d) lecture and examination systems: (e) libraries; (f) administration of the university. Both staff and students have been invited to contribute evidence and suggestions, so that the report may be as representative as possible. The other proposal concerns a series of addresses and discussions on university problems, to which members of the College Council, staff, and student bojdy have been invited. Dr. J. Hight gave the first address this month on “History of the University.” Next week the topic will be other universities, when the speakers will be Mr G. Lawton (American universities), Dr. B. H. Mason (Scandinavian universities), Mr S. R. Siemon (Australian universities). British universities will be discussed at the next meeting by Professor F. C. Chalklin (London) and Mr N. C. Phillips (Oxford). Other addresses will be by Dr. H. E. Field on “Teaching in the University," Dr. R, S. Allan and Dr. H. N. Parton, on “Research in the University,” Mr J. H. E. Schroder, on “Administration of the University,” and finally a “brains trust” session will b,e held to discuss students’ problems.
