FRENCH HORSES SUCCESSFUL

RACING

ENGLISH TURF -INVADED

hac been an invasion of the turf by French Worses this year, &g ßsn th „ have been very success- >» d fjg rated the best three-year-old IM 5 ’ won tHe Coronation ® ’lt the Derby meeting; and Marsyas CUP at h llf-brother by the English sir? JL/ d o"to Caracalla 11, the winner of ?*!St Gold Cup last week, won the SS-.. Rose Stakes of one mile and seven ft Hurst Park. French-bred furlmSS 1 won thiE race in 1938 and Ardan made a great impression on critics. Other French horses “ScFfre racing in England are Coaraze, X » l 545 French Derby winner, Pnan 11, SAlrUrgay. Faliero, Chanteur, and Ba-last-named two finished second sd ?thM respectively in the Ascot Gold So but no details of the performances C “*7-_ zythers are to hand. 0 cSacalia H is evidently an outstanding as before winning the Ascot Gold over two miles and a half in SSice on lune 14. English critics have concern at the dearth of stay- « the country; but it is nothing un-French-bred horses to be sucfSftll in England. Win tor Beau Cheval tn winning the Adelaide Birthday Cup the former Ricearton-trained JSS Beau Cheval registered a first-class JSSrmance. He was at good double-hgure S and comfortably defeated the brUSS' thtee-year-old Norwicn, and the JdSaiS cup winner Little Tich. Two later. Beau Cheval ran unplaced in Se seven furlong City Handicap of £ll5O. by Royal Gem, carrying 9-0. Royal is a brilliant colt by Dhoti, one of ere horses that would have been raced st the Duke of Kent had he assumed nffire as Governor-General of Australia, iloval Gem may tackle Bernborough in Srne of the weight-for-age races in Melbourne in the spring. Beau Cheval was «ld™y Mr R. J. Murphy, of Wellington, tn a South Australian breeder, who will have him at the stud there in the coming season.

In the Veteran Stage The Joker, which has never been quite sound since he returned from his unsuccessful trip to Melbourne, is being eiven road work again, preparatory to commencing serious training again The Toker is now nine years old, but he carries his age well, and he has not been over-raced during his career. In the 19424? season The Joker showed first-class staying form. He ran fourth in the New Zealand Cup, and then won the Wellington Cup the Sockbum Handicap, and the Great Autumn Handicap. Such a sequence of wins this season would have credited a horse with £6815, whereas in 38 starts during his career The Joker has won nine races and £5965 in stakes. Such is the .increase in stake values. Wingatui Hurdlers Injured Amorlad injured himself slightly while gchooling at Wingatui recently and will be spelled for a month before his education as a hurdler is resumed. Court Dress, in the same stable, suffered a cut when returning from the Ashburton meetfhg in a float, but the injury is not serious and after a short rest he will be ready to resume work again. Their trainer A E. Didham, left Wingatui on Mon-day-on his way to Melbourne, and during his absence his large team will be in the charge of A. P. Powell. Hunto Won Easily Though he had run third in the Great Northern Hurdles with 11-0 a few weeks ago a race which he won in 1944 with 10-10 Hunto was only third favourite for the Whakatu Hurdles at Hastings on Saturday, both Shepherd's Mate and Blue Title being preferred to him. Hunto was patiently ridden in the early part of the race, and when Shepherd’s Mate dropped back after hitting several hurdles Hunto went up to Gold Money Song, the leader. Hunto had a slight advantage crossing the last hurdle and drew out on the flat to win comfortably by five lengths. The second favourite. Blue Title, was at the rear of the field for most of the journey, and came on well to beat Gold Money Song by a head for second money. On Saturday Hunto was giving Blue Title only 131 b, whereas in the Great Northern Hurdles (in which Blue Title finished second, three lengths ahead of Hunto), Hunto was giving him 221 b. If he is entered in the Grand National Hurdles, Hunto will be entitled to serious consideration. First Win Over Hurdles

The Blenheim-trained gelding Matapan had his first vrin over hurdles when he won the Hastings Hack Hurdles at Hastings last Saturday. Matapan fell at his previous start; but he has previously been placed over hurdles on several occasions. He acts best in firmer going, and had a track to suit him on Saturday. After appearing to be in for an easy win, Matapan was challenged strongly over the last bit by Tracer, and in a close finish won by a head. Matapan is a six-year-old gelding by Night Raid from Battleflag, the dam of Slayer, so he should stay well and further successes as a hurdler should come his way. Related to Cuddle and Padishah Indian Sky, the winner of the Clifton Hack Handicap at Hastings last Saturday, is by Bulandshar from Fondle, a halflister to Cuddle, by Leighton from Caress, by Martian from the imported mare Trichas. As Caress was also the dam of Padishah, and several of Bulandshar’s stock have been capable jumpers, Indian Sky, on breeding at least, should have possibilities as a jumper. Never Near the Front Dearo has generally run her best races out in front, but in the Maronan Handicap at Ashburton on Saturday, she was never within striking distance of the leaders, and finished a weak eighth, having only Big Top, Sir Bernard, and Grand Forest behind her. Her form was a contrast to that shown in the Tainui Handicap on the third day at Dunedin when she led to within a few strides of the post, and was beaten by Dash o’ Bink by a head only. Although Saturday’s race was over an additional furlong, it should not have troubled Dearo as she has won up to one mile and a quarter. Few Racing Fixtures On Saturday there is no racing fixture in the South Island and only two, at Hastings and Te Rapa,, in the North Island. Although there will be four meetings in Canterbury during July, trainers in Otago and Southland will have a particularly quiet time unless they travel to Canterbury, as there is not another meeting scheduled in those districts until the Otago Hunt Club’s meeting on September J, a date which has still to be approved by the Racing Conference. Consistency Rewarded Newel Post, the winner of the maiden race at Hastings, was due for a success ® he had been placed second in his four starts. He is a three-year-old ending by the Limond horse, SpiraLrfrom lattice by Pombal from Cowl. He is wed on somewhat similar lines to Veilwhich is by Limond from Veil, another daughter of Cowl. Newel Post yas the cheapest of Mr G. M. Currie’s waft of yearlings at the 1944 sales, bring“g only 170gns. Chatsworth Sold Waimate trainer, J. Mitchell, has Purchased the stallion Chatsworth, which come south next week. Chatsworth was imported to New Zealand in 1939 by SL W -. Burch. It is reported that "htchcll will be restricting his training in future, and that he will poncemrate on building up a thoroughwed stud at Waimate.
