FIRE LOSSES IN U.S.

STEADY INCREASE REPORTED 40,000 CASUALTIES LAST YEAR (Rec. 10.45 p.m.) NEW YORK, June 28 “Fires in the United States cause the death of more than 10000 personsand a financial loss of 500.000,000 dollars annually, making this the world’s No. 1 fire trap,” said Mr Herbert Friede, Superintendent of Fire Alarms in Washington, at the convention of Eastern Association Fire Chiefs. “There has been a steady increase in the nation’s fire losses during the last five years, with more than 6000 fires and 40,000 casualties for the year ended March 81?’ The convention adjourned with the announcement that a nine-alarm fire was burning at the Staten Island ferry terminal, which caused the fire chiefs to rush for the exits. The fire caused 2,000,000 dollars damage. Two persons, possibly three, were burned to death, and 18 were sent to hospital. 'While the fire was burning plans for a new terminal costing 11.000,000 dollars were delivered by engineers to the City Hall. FUTURE CONTROL OF GREENLAND QUESTION OF DANISH SOVEREIGNTY LONDON, June 25. “Denmark is interested in the establishment of a permanent meteorological station in north Greenland, but it wants it to be owned and operated by Denmark and not by the United States,” said the Danish Foreign Minister (Mr Rasmussen) at a press conference in Copenhagen. Mr Rasmussen said that the United States had proposed the establishment of a station there. He also revealed that Russia had offered to transfer half of the 250,000 German prisoners of war remaining in Denmark to the Russian-occupied zone of Germany if the British and American zones would take the remainder.

Reuter’s correspondent in Copenhagen says it is learned that the Danish Government is ready to resume full sovereignty over Greenland and take over the American-built meteorological stations and airfields there. The Danish Minister in Washington (Mr Kaufmann) is discussing the termination of the war-time agreement signed with President Roosevelt in 1941, which placed Greenland virtually under the protection of the United States. BRITISH MANDATES IN AFRICA DISCUSSIONS WITH U.S. PLANNED LONDON, June 25. The United States Acting-Secretary of State (Mr Dean Acheson) said that British and American talks would be held on the future of the three British mandated territories in Africa, Tanganyika, Togoland, and the Cameroons.
