ARGENTINE GOLD RELEASED
FUNDS FROZEN BY U.S. SEQUEL TO ENVOY’S VISIT (Rec. 8.45 Pj”^ NOS ai reS, June 25. The Argentine Foreign Office announced that the United States had released 644,000,000 dollars m gold, comprising the bulk of Argentine funds frozen since the summer of 1944. A message from Washington says the State Department confirmed the release of the gold following the sudden departure from the capital of General Carlos von der Becke, the special envoy of the Peron regime, who left after a series of conferences in which he argued Argentina s case for American equipment to enable jus country to achieve military parity with other Latin American nations. The Washington correspondent or the “New York Herald-Tribune" says there is no indication what success General von der Becke achieved, but diplomatic circles regarded the gold release as Indicating a gradual softening of American policy war Department officials have Indicated their belief that Mr Truman’s hemisphere defence programme requires Argentina's participation.
Deaths In Ammunition Explosion.— Seven soldiers were killed and 12 seriously injured and 19 injured when obsolete ammunition which they were loading into a landing craft for dumping at sea exploded at Cairnryan, Wigtownshire.—London, June 25.
