PROFESSORS’ BAN

AUCKLAND STUDENT PUBLICATIONS

LAMPOON IN REVUE PROGRAMME

(P.A.) AUCKLAND, June 27. . Student ire has been aroused at Auckland University College after the receipt by its executive of a letter from the chairman or the Professorial Board, Professor A. B. Fitt, that with certain exceptions no student puMiwtion will be permitted after June SO. The ban arises from an objection by the executive committee of tne Professorial Board to an article entitled “Unusual 1 Case,” lampooning Professor Fitt, which appeared in tne 1946 Umve£Bity revue programme. While apologising for the publication of the article, and regretting that a serious view was taken of the article, which had not been intended to give offence, the executive of the Students’ Association on Tuesday night carried a motion expressing the strongest resentment at the proposal to suspend student publications which, It said, it would ba bound to fight in every way possible. The executive also considered that feeling within and without the college <on this matter was so strong that it was unwilling to be responsible for the consequences of action proposed by the executive co®mittee of tne Professorial Board. . - , “This article shotild not have been published, especially in a students publication, and the committee was unanimous in regarding it as rude, in; suiting, and likely to give rise to hurt, states a copy of the letter from tne chairman of the Professorial Bo®”*’ which is posted, together with tne minutes of the student executive meeting, dn the .students’ notice board a* the college. “As the Students’ Association haj neglected to safeguard sufficiently publication privileges, no student pup' lication will be permitted for 12montns from June 30, 1946, with the excep; tion that the next number of ‘Craccum will be permitted, provided it contains an apology regarding the publication of the article,” says the letter.
