SOUTH EAST ASIA PROBLEMS
POLITICAL COMMITTEE FORMED
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) SINGAPORE, June 23. The Governor-General of the Malayan Union (Mr Malcolm MacDonald) announced the establishment of a political committee consisting of himself and Lord Killearn to consider all foreign and colonial questions in South-east Asia. Mr MacDonald will advise the British Government on colonial questions and Lord Killearn will advise Whitehall on foreign policy as the committee’s work develops. Contact will probably be established with the Australian and New Zealand Governments and other governments concerned. Mr MacDonald said the problem of the Sultan’s attitude had not yet been closed. His and Sir Edward Gents views at present were under examination in London. The primary goal of British policy in Malaya, as elsewhere, was steady development toward self-government.
