AUCKLAND FORM

FAVOURITES FARE POORLY

In spite of unfavourable weather and track conditions, some splendid racing was seen at Epsom on Saturday, when the Auckland Trotting Club brought its meeting to a close. Favourites fared poorly, Ena Parrish being the only one to succeed. Double-figure dividends were returned by Gold Strand and Herald, and Diamond Trust, Too True, and Stylish Boy all returned dividends approaching double figures. Although he lost fully 70 yards by a faulty beginning, Eaton settled down to trot solidly, and won by a length from the favourite, Ena Parrish, in the Putiki Handicap. Wharekawa made the pace for ■a mile and three-quarters, but weakened in the straight and allowed Sabre to get up and take third money. After being well placed in the early running. Swordsman’s Triumph broke and dropped out of the contest.

Black Machine took the lead before three furlongs had been covered In the First Oneroa Handicap, and then made a bold attempt to lead for the rest of the way. He was closely followed by Auto Era and Gold Strand at the home turn, and in a fine finish Gold Strand got up to win by a neck from Auto Era, with Black Machine another neck away in third place. Auto Chief showed a lot of speed in this race, but broke on each of the bends. Sypland and Whanako made the pace for most of the way in the Three Kings Handicap, with Too True, Jackalette, and Sandstone always handy. The field bunched crossing the top, where Too True took charge to look the winner at the distance, but Sandstone challenged and got up to win by a head. Gamester, which had run up to be handy to the leaders at the three furlongs post, finished in third place just ahead of Jackalette, which had to cover extra ground over the final stages, Ann Scott began in her best style in the Mount Wellington Handicap, to lead the field to the mile in 2min 24sec, where Cry Baby, Maioha (on the outer). Diamond Trust, and Brass Buttons were handy. At the two furlongs post, Maioha took over the lead, but Diamond Trust made a lucky run on the rails and was first into the straight. Diamond Trust increased his advantage in the straight jo win by four lengths from his stablemate. Brass Buttons, with Maioha another three lengths away in third place. Ann (Bcott faded into fourth place, and the rest of the field finished well back. Jottings Sura Wave, which was sent out second tavowiie tor the Mount Robson Handl-

qi imin oojsec, inrined a record crowd When he gave an exhibition at Santa Anita, California, recently. Sky Raider, Greyhound’s brother, won the 17 Bar Trot at tbe same meeting. On her performance in the Mayfield Handicap at Ashburton, Maximum should race well in the Trial Handicap at Addington on Saturday. Answers to Correspondents “Wager.”—£l 10s 6d. “Interested.”—£s 2s. Another Cup Campaign B - t ? ri S e bro “B h t Haughty tn from her spell last week, and she has now commenced her preparation for her fifth cup campaign. At her first appearance in Cup company Haughty took the major honours in 1942 by two lengths from Loyal Hey, with Bayard a neck away, followed by Gold Bar another length away in fourth place. In 1943 she was again successful, this time having a two. lengths advantage over Countless, with Pacing Power and Gold Bar filling the minor places. Starting from the 60 yards mark in the 1944 Cup, Haughty gave a solid display, but was beaten out of the money, the race being won by Bronze Eagle, with Integrity a length and a half away, followed by Pacing Power and Coifotless. Last year the Nelson Derby—Regal Voyage mare started from the 48 yards mark, and she was unfortunate in colliding with Happy Mpn and having to be pulled up just after she had commenced her finishing run with less than three furlongs to go. Haughty has proved that age has not dimmed her brilliance by recording a win and four minor placings this season, and her Cup preparation will be followed With interest.

cap at Auckland, struck trouble at a critical stage of the race and lost his chance. Paul Cojlette is back in work in C. SDonald’s team at Belfast. Gamester, which was carried out‘wide at the entrance to the straight in the Three Kings Handicap at Auckland on Saturday, resented the use of the whip in the straight, and refused to do his best until his chance of success had disappeared. Mr John Fairbairn, who died on Tuesday, was well known in trotting circles. Gemlight was among the horses he raced With success some years ago. Greyhound, which holds a mile record

Both by Pe*k Hill A feature of the Sydney Derby meeting, which was held at Harold Park last month, was that both the winner of the trotting division and of the pacing division of the Derby are by the sensational but now defunct Peak Hill. The scarcity of three-year-old trotters in New South Wales is illustrated by the fact that only two trotters. Peak’s Promise and Parklawn, paraded for the final of the trotting Derby. Peak’s Promise had a reputation as a freak trotter, and his performance to win the Leeton Trotting Derby in hollow fashion evidently

In the final Oro Bay, which had won the first division, provided stiff opposition for Silver Peak, which was forced to set a record of 3min 17 2-ssec to win. Back in Form Gamble King gave a fine display from the IB yards mark in the Winter Handicap on the second day of the Ashburton Trotting Club’s meeting, to beat all put Battle On. If he begins correctly he should be the hardest to beat in the Belwyn Handicap at Addington on Saturday. Records Broken The two-year-old pacer, Old Grandad. ■ set a world’s record of Imin IJsec for the I half-mile distance to open the third week I of the mammoth harness meeting at Santa Anita Park, California, on Aori! 29 A world’s record for trotters over the mile and one-sixteenth course was set by War Glory in winning the 7 Bar Trot at the meeting in 2min 35sec. This erased the record of 2min 351 see set by Harry Traig with Calumet Epsom in 1937. The feature of the thirteenth day of the meeting was the 5000 dollars handicap pace which was won by the Volo- i mite horse King’s Counsel, a veteran freerfor-aller. Placed back 120 feet by the handicappers, E. J. Baker’s star had to cover extra ground to go round the I bunched field, but he got .up to win nar- ! rowly in 2min 3sec, a world’s record tor i a handicap evenj.
