RUGBY FOOTBALL
LANCASTER PARK ARRANGEMENTS FAULTS IN BACK PLAY The president (Mr W. E. Maxwell) reported at a meeting of the management committee of the Canterbury Rugby Union, last evening, that the Associa? tion football representatives had met and had come to satisfactory arrangements. A Rugby curtain-raiser would be played on July 13 at Lancaster Park Oval, followed by the Inter-Island Association football match. The day’s gate takings would be equally shared. Mr J. N. Clarke complained about persistent kicking by inside backs, and spoke of the detrimental effect it had on play. He suggested getting into touch with coaches with a view to controlling this practice. It was his opinion that it was the Canterbury Rugby Union’s business to do something about it. Mr Maxwell: This will probably be dealt with at the next meeting of the coaches’ committee.
Mr A. E. McPhail: At the recent Otago v. Canterbury University match there was very little kicking. Mr Maxwell: There has been a big improvement in back play, probably because teams are becoming fitter. When asked his opinion, Mr J. O. Hattersley (one of the Canterbury selectors) said that he agreed with Mr Clarke. Backs were kicking to make play safe rather than to open up the game. The Kaiapoi Football Club agreed to the suggested senior match on July 13, and this was approved. Nominations were received for selectors for the various grades, the following being elected:— Junior Grade.—G. Glubb (Marist), G. Rhodes (Merivale), and R. L. Rossiter (High School Old Boys). Third Grade— J. Middleton (Albion), N. Smith (Merivale), and A. T. Campbell (High School Old Boys). Fourth Grade —W. Clarke (Mgrist), A. Lilburn (Albion), and E. Thornton (Sydenham). The. Junior Committee reported its suggestion for the Ashburton representative games, for under-weight, under-age teams. Early September was decided on as the best. time, with September 7 as a possible date. It was further recom-. mended that the under-weight, under age games be played at 1.15 p.m., so that the players might have an opportuntiy of watching senior matches. The competition committee reported that only one match would be played on Lancaster Park South ground on Saturday, so that the ground might be in a good condition for the Otago v. Canterbury hockey match. After discussion of the bad state of many of the grounds, it was decided that the grounds committee should look into the possibilities of acquiring further grounds.
It was agreed to order 3000 rule books, made up in book form instead of pamphlets, as originally planned. Mr E. V. Phillips said that he was surprised at the number of youthful players who had asked for rule books. A recommendation from the finance committee that £5O should be given to the Captain Upham Scholarship Fund was approved.
