MODERN WARFARE
Sir, —I would like to express my appreciation of your editorial entitled “Modern Warfare.’’ In the same issue of “The Press” I find that the American Army’s peace-time budget is some 7.000,000,000 dollars, the largest ever, and the Army’s request of 200,000,000 for atomic development is being almost doubled (while foreign relief is reduced by 150,000,000 dollars). Plans are being made in London for Empire defence, in which New Zealand is to play an increased part. In spite of the destruction of enemy war potential, there is as yet no sign of general disarmament among the victors. The time has come for the people of this and other countries to serve notice on their governments that they will haye no part in any future war. In the age of atomic war it must at last be obvious that our obligation to humanity transcends all national and racial loyalties.—Yours, etc., W. J. FOOTE. June 24, 1946.
Sir, —All discerning folk will be grateful for your editorial review of Liddell Hart’s book on modern warfare. From your article this fact is made strikingly clear: that there can be no appeasement of the god of war. It is literally all or nothing. It would appear, therefore, that the most constructive and real contribution that any individual can make towards resolving the dilemma into which modern society has drifted is to restudy the life and teaching of Jesus Christ, and become a follower. In so doing, and spending his energies' through some church or group that is pacifist, he will be doing his share towards breaking the vicious circle. This is the antidote to the bane of modern competitive armaments.—Yours, etc., A.J.J. June 24, 1946.
