PROFITABLE LIVESTOCK
Not the least profitable livestock on those farms which still support them are, it seems, rabbits. In Dunedin last week what are claimed to be world's record prices- for certain grades of skins was paid. First winter bucks went up to 218 pence per lb, which is about 3s apiece for good skins. Some of the coloured varieties went even higher, and up to 222 pence was paid for fawns. Those were the prices bid at auction, but buyers are required to contribute to the subsidy bn summer rabbiting, and the highest price of the day was 227£d, or £1 3s lid for a pound of skins. After the 1914-18 war prices went very high, but not as high as present levels. SHOW DATES Marlborough A. and P. Assn., at Blenheim—October 22-23. Ellesmere A. and P. Assn., at Leeston— October 19. Although the. worst of the winter has still to come, the first lamb of the season reported in the Temuka district was born last Saturday, which was the shortest day of the year. The lamb was born on the property of Mr L. V. Talbot, Longdowns, Kakahu. The new arrival is strong and healthy and is thriving well.
