PORINA DAMAGE In recent weeks several lines of ewes, most of them well above average m quality, have come into Adamgton for sale because porina has cleaned up the pasture that should have been available for them. An excellent example of how serious this may be is provided by a farm in the Kirwee district, where porina damage is responsible for an embarrassing feed position. The padlocks affected will De ° ut of. commission for many months, until they regenerate or are re sown. Whole paddocks on this farm, which is of about 500 acres, have been practically completely denuded of grass The grubs have left only old, dry stalks, and odd plants of white clover. In parts the ground is completely bare. The total areg eaten out amounts to qboqt 130 acres, more than a quarter of the whole farm, and about nan of the available winter grass. Several areas of Hl, short rotation ryegrass have been put down on the farm, aqd it has suffered heavily. Apparently it is as palatable to the insect as it is to sheep. Most of the damage on this farm could have been ’avoided by the use of poison.
