TEST MATCH AT LORD’S

ENGLAND SCORES 428

DOUBLE CENTURY TO HARDSTAFF (N.Z. Press Association— Copyrißht) (Rec. 11 P.m.) LONDON, June 23. J, Hardstaff was unconquered for 205 in England’s first Innings against India in the first test at Lord s. Hafdstaff batted for a little over five hours, and hit 16 fours. He and Gibb, in a solid fifth-wicket partnership of 182 runs in 170 minutes, put England in a very sound position. The batting of Hardstaff and Gibb was in marked contrast. Hardstaff was confident and scored freely, de-

spite the accurate bowling of Amarnath and Hazare. Gibb was painstakingly slow, his 60 including only three fours. India had lost seven wickets for 209 in their second Innings. Mankad, in

spite of India’s leeway, batted very brightly, making 63 in 85 minutes. He hit a six and seven fours. Scores:— INDIA First innings ..20U ENGLAND First Innings L. Hutton, c Nayudu. b Amapnath .. 7 C.
