TANGANYIKA’S FUTURE
PROPOSAL FOR UNO ' TRUSTEESHIP
PROTEST BY BRITISH • SETTLERS (Rec. 7.45 p.m.) NAIROBI, June 23. The British Association has petitioned the Governor of Tanganyika Territory (Sir William Battersbee) on behalf of British settlers protesting against the transfer of Tanganyika to United Nations trusteeship, and urging Crown Colony status. The petition recalls that more than 50.000 Tanganyikans died in the first world war, and questions whether their sacrifice would be justified if Tanganyika never became part of the British Empire. The petition also contends that Britain sold land to the pioneers under a guarantee that Tanganyika would always be British —a promise often repeated but never fulfilled. Nevertheless Tanganyika now was a colony in fact if not in name. The petition adds that no section of the population was consulted before the trusteeship decision. It complains that the African peoples are being made pawns in international politics.
