COLLECTION OF FAT

HOUSE-TO-HOUSE CANVASS TO BE HELD

A house-to-house collection of . fats for Great Britain will be undertaken by the Christchurch Famine Emergency Committee in one suburb of Christchurch. This was decided at a meeting of the committee yesterday. Many housewives did not know that they could take their accumulated fats to a central depot in Cathedral square, and others might think that their collection was too small to warrant a journey to the city, said the chairman (Mr J. L. Hay). The co-operation of boy scouts and girl guides in any house-to-house collection had been promised. The secretary (Mr E. A. Chivers) said that the Auckland committee had not been in favour of a canvassing scheme but had tried it in one district, and the results had been surprisingly good. A suggestion was made that motortrucks carrying large tins could drive around a suburb. Children could enter the houses and tell housewives about the collection, and any accumulated fats could be tipped into the large tins. Details of the scheme will be submitted to the next meeting of the committee. Sub-centres of the Red Cross Society may now apply to the Red Cross depot in Christchurch for large tins in which to put fat.
