RATING FOR HOSPITALS
LIKELY TOPIC EARLY IN SESSION (From Our- Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, June 23. The sharp reply given by the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. P. Fraser) to the request of local bodies for relief in hospital rating will give additional interest to the discussion on the report of the Local Government Committee in the House of Representatives. This, and the Bretton Woods discussion, may be highlights of the early part of the Parliamentary session. The division of opinion whether New Zealand should ratify the Brettor. Woods agreement cuts across party lines. The indication of the Leader of the Opposition (Mr S. G, Holland) that the majority of the National Party oppose ratification has caused speculation about the Government’s intentions. Bretton Woods will certainly be discussed, but there is at least a doubt whether legislation ratifying it will be introduced. Mr Fraser’s reply to the local body deputation • merely confirmed a hint he gave last year, when he said there were parts of the report with which he could not agree. The House will listen with interest to what Mr Fraser has to say about other parts of the report, such as the recommendation for a greater Government contribution to the cost of fire brigades.
