(P.A.) AUCKLAND, June 23. Heavy flooding and slips in North Auckland at the week-end resulted in much of the far north becoming temporarily closed to road traffic. A northeast gale buffeted all the northern part of the province, but there were no reports of any serious damage .to property. Rail services were not interrupted and, although the departure of the ketch Golden Hind from Auckland for the islands was delayed, there were no instances of damage to shipping or pleasure craft. Transmission on a number of telephone and telegraph lines was interrupted through trees falling across the wires.
From 3 p.m. onward on Saturday, gusts of wind of more than 50 miles an hour were recorded at the meteorological office at Mechanics’ Bay, steadily increasing until the strongest gust of 56 miles an hour was recorded early this morning. The gale moderated at midday. In North Auckland, rain has fallen almost incessantly since Thursday, although it Was decreasing to-night. In Whangarei nearly Bin of rain have been recorded since Thursday and the State highways north and south have been flooded, although motor traffic can still get through.
