SUCCESSFUL CONCERT Maintaining its reputation for' ful preparation and to*, 61 ".? formance. the Eroica Club held on Saturday its first concert of the year. Apologising for the absence of the president. Mr Ernest Empson, Dr. Vernon Griffiths paid tribute to him and the work of the club, with its Por pose of providing young ‘i 1 ® opportunity of public P cr tormance. The standard of work was high, and the performers played with a sense of responsibility to the respective comnosers. There was, however, a ten dency to underestimate th L t ?“ a 2 u sources of the pianoforte and to allow the difficulties of note finding to en gulf the.art of tone production. •‘Carnaval.” that epitome of Schumann’s emotional duality, was masterfully performed by Maurice TOh Schumann's rhythmic vagaries were nicely defined, and any temptation to sacrifice, clarity for speed was generally suppressed. The verve and rest less activity was admirably gortraywl but on occasions, for instance in ■‘Chopin” and ‘ Eusebius., one felt the lack of emotional “grip Lois Manning., remembered for her excellent rendering of Variations in F. Played Beethoven » Variation in C minor. This work, akin in mood to his Fi *h Symphony, requires a broad conception of the possibilities in Variation form. By skilful tempi changes she gave thework a unity; but a tendency to hurry- the opening variations anticipated to some extent the climax. She was best in the crisp staccato passages and tne rapid bravura flourishes. Clare Neale, with a wide range or tone inflection, gave a musical performance of the third Chopin Scherzo particularly pleasing was her tonal warmth. Rhona Thomas played the Chopin Prelude in D minor, managing very well the awkward left-hana problems but missing to some extent the turgid bitterness. The Impromptu in F sharp was more in keeping with h W^w y ic n k g l£ O r?fs, who has developed considerably since the last concert, gave a commendable performance or the Brahms B minor Rhapsody. Vera Yager played three Chopm Studies, and Moira O’Kane gave the Beethoven Andante in F. A work not often performed was the Bauer tra™’®ription of the ; Cesar Franck Organ Prelude Fugue and Variation. This with a serenity not always appropriate, Was played by Joan Browne, who otherwise gave a satisfactory interpretation. . During the evening songs by Schubert, Brahms, and Grieg were sung by Alison Cordery. An vocalist, she interprets with a feeling for lieder. The accompaniments were well played by Wainwright Morgan.
