Every _deep ,c rac e fell, and eventually "°iv two completed the course. «®S,_ winner of the steeplechase, Braa ran off at the second fence of the r double, but his rider, R. Hawes, ‘ {him back to clear the fence when Since Dolomite refused at the brush near the mile post. He went on but fell at the brush fence near JjTfive furlongs. However, Hawes maininid his hold of the reins and remounted m complete the course and win by a from Spanish Main,' which haa at the first of the stand double, Sit which, remounted, completed the nrse safely. It was not for the want ? ttving that none of the others competed the course, but their riders’ effort* in vain. in the principal event on the prodrome the Mayfield Hack Handicap, th** Exbridge gelding Falconbridge, had a overdue win, his first since Labour nnv 1944- In 24 starts since then he has Everal times failed by some very narnw margins, and some of his placed performances have been very good efforts. Samoage was the smartest out, but with a inrlonfi covered True way joined him in <he lead and they were closely followed ® Desert Victory, Doulas Haig, Detain, ,nd Here Hine, with Falconbridge and E-i r Ready in the rear. Down to the hdf-mile Falconbridge was three out, and fad improved his position gradually to L in seventh place there. The order «4s much the same until the straight enhance where Falcc-nbridge commenced • forward move. Trueway had the better nf Rampage approaching the final furlong when Desert Victory and Falconhridee challenged. Falconbridge finished an and won by half a length, with Desert Victory a neck behind True way. Douglas Haig was fourth, three lengths back then came Detain, Rampage, and Court Dress, Pandemonium, Ever Ready. Here Hine (which stopped badly), and Belfort. The favourite, Salary, won the Maronan Handicap decisively after being nicely nlaced in the running throughout. Whitiev and Sanskrit began smartly, and were the first to show out; but Lexia quickly ran up to them at the seven furlongs. Sanskrit soon dropped in behind, and Whitley and Lexia opened up a gap of three lengths on Sanskrit, Grand Forest, Salary, Dash o’ Dink, and Montezuma. The order was much the same down to the half-mile, where the leaders had increased their lead to five lengths, but round to the straight entrance Salary, Grand Forest, and Sanskrit began to close . n the leaders. Lexia had Whitley beaten more than a furlong from the post, where •alary and Sanskrit were also challenging and Dash o’ Dink was also putting in an appearance. Salary finished solidly over the last half furlong, and had threeouarters of a length to spare at the post from Sanskrit, which was two lengths clear of Lexia, w’hich was weakening at the finish, just lasting to beat Dash o’ Dink by a head. Lexia’s effort of disputing the lead with Whitley left her without any reserve at the finish. Honest Sal finished on strongly for fifth just behind Dash o’ Dink, and was clear of Whitley, Montezuma, Dearo, Big Top, Sir Bernard, and Grand Forest.
