KIDNAPPED OFFICERS IN PALESTINE

Military Searches And Precautions STRENGTH OF ARMED JEWS ESTIMATED (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 8 p.m.) LONDON, June 19. A sixth British Army officer has probably been kidnapped according to a police announcement in Tel Aviv. He is a headquarters officer, Major Chadwick, who failed to appear at a staff meeting. The police said they believed that he was being held as a hostage. The police have found a clue to the kidnappers of the five British officers. It is an abandoned taxi-cab with a bottle of chloroform in the back seat, which was discovered near the village of Rishonlezion, south-east of Tel Aviv. It is officially announced that the British Army officers kidnapped in the Tel Aviv are Captain Spencer, Royal EngineersCaptain Rae, Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers; Captain Warburton, 4th Parachute Battalion, and Captain Taylor, 17th Parachute Battalion. The Royal Air Force officer who was kidnapped with the four Army officers is Flight Lieutenant T. A. Russell, Deputy Assistant Provost Marshal.

In Washington, Mr Nahum Goldman, American representative on the Jewish Agency for Palestine, predicted in a talk With the British Ambassador to Washington (Lord Inverchapel) that the British would have to kill 10,000 Jews in Palestine if they sought to disarm the Jewish groups in that country. Reporting his prediction to the press, Mr Goldman said there Were 60.000 to 70,000 Jews in Palestine who would not allow themselves to be arrested. “They will fight for their own selfprotection and will not be disarmed unless the British organise a mass massacre.”
