TREATMENT OF CANCER
EARLY DIAGNOSIS NECESSARY REPORT BY CHAIRMAN 1 OF CLINIC Both the public and the medical profession were becoming aware that early diagnosis of suspected cancer cases was most important, said a report by Mr W. M. Cotter, chairman of the Cancer Consultation Clinic, received at the annual meeting of the Canterbury district of the New Zealand branch of the British Empire Cancer Campaign Society yesterday. There had been no great change in i-iethods of treatment of cancer during the year, said Mr Cotter. However, it was hoped that the “radon” plant would be in production at an early date, and that would permit quicker" treatment of certain types of cancer. “With our present methods, the only way in which we can hope to get anv great improvement in results is by earlier diagnosis,” continued Mr Cotter. “There is no doubt that this improvement is occurring, but there is still room for a good deal of improvement. Many persons delay coming to *the clinic because of fear and a sense of hopelessness. Cancer however, can be cured in the great majority of cases, provided diagnosis is made sufficiently early.”
Many patients were old persons who lived alone and they often failed to return to the clinic for “after-treatment” and observation, said the report. It was hoped that a nurse from the District Nursing Association would be attached to the clinic, and such a person would be valuable to follow up cases and arrange nursing care.
The chairman of the division (Sir Hugh Acland) said that doubts had been expressed whether the society was carrying out its obligations. Research work had been in abeyance during the recent war. but there was no cause to doubt that cancer research had progressed. and it could be said that the work of the division had been satisfactory during the last year, and it could expect success in the future,"
