SHOW GROUNDS AS ALTERNATIVE
LEAGUE TO APPROACH RUGBY UNION The Canterbury Rugby League will approach the Canterbury Rugby Union with a request for the use of the Addington Show Grounds for the match between the touring English League team and the South Island on July 27. This decision was made by the executive of the league at a special meeting called last evening to consider the refusal of the Canterbury Rugby Union to grant the use of Lancaster Park. The league has also applied for the use of the Addington Trotting Ground on July 27, but doubts are held as to the suitability of this ground for such a fixture. In a statement issued after the' meeting the League executive contended that a precedent for the use of Lancaster Park by Rugby League players had already been set on at least two occasions—on August 7 and -9, 1920. The executive also said that when the English League team visited Christchurch in 1936 the Canterbury Rugby Union granted the use of the Addington Show Grounds and in addition provided an official to check and receive the proper gate, percentages. “The executive deplores the fact that this decision of the Canterbury Rugby Union is inconsistent with previous actions of the union,” the statement concluded.
