FIVE MINOR FIRES
The Christchurch Fire Brigade answered five calls yesterday to minor outbreaks in various parts of the city and suburbs. The first was at 3.26 p.m. to a wrecking company at 453 Colombo street, a single-storeyed building. An oil burner had been placed too close to a pile of wooden cases, and these caught fire. Slight damage was done to the northern wall.
The east wall of a building at 375 Worcester street, occupied by Mr J. Fahey, was slightly damaged when it caught fire while men were burning off paint. The brigade was called at 3.40 p.m.
■pie third call was at 5.29 p.m. to a chimney fire at 14 Norwood street, Beckenham, premises occupied by Phyllis Heat A rubbish fire broke out at the rear of the Crown Clothing Company’s premises in Bedford row at 6.10 p.m.. but little damage was done. The last call was at 6.42 p.m. to a tram at the comer of Cashmere road and Barrington street. Apparently overheating of the gear caused an outbreak of fire, which was soon extinguished.
The Christchurch Fire Brigade answered two calls on Wednesday. The first, at 2.57 p.m., was to 9 Margaret street. Lower Riccarton, where a fire had broken out in the kitchen of a house occupied by Mr T. G. Marsh. The damage was extensive, practically only the walls being left standing, the contents, on which there was no insurance, being destroyed When the fire broke out there was no one in the house.
The second call was at 3.58 p.m. to the building of W. H. Price and Son. Ltd., Manchester street. A fire had started in one of the workshops when a spark from a welding machine ignited some kerosene which had been spilled on the floor. The fire was put out before any damage resulted.
