"ROMMEL TORE UP ORDERS"
REFUSAL TO KILL COMMANDOS CLAIM IN EVIDENCE BY GERMAN GENERAL (Rec. 8 p.fti.) NUREMBERG. June 18. Field-Marshal Rommel, standing outside the ruins of Sidi Barrani in 1942, angrily tore to shreds 10 minutes after he had received them Hitler’s orders to kill all British commandos, contrary to the rules of warfare, according to General Kurt Westphal, former Chief of Staff of the Afrika Korns. General Westphal was giving evidence before a five-member com- ’ mission which is hearing in private advance information to prepare the way for the prosecution’s cases against German organisations, including the General Staff, the Gestapo, and the "General Westphal declared that Rommel’s army fought ”e professional’’ war within the Geneva Convention and respected the rights of prisoners. He said that Rommel, in the Western Desert, was able to ignore Hitler’s orders, but that army commanders nearer home in Europe were not in the same position.
