NEW RAILWAY LOOP

LINE FROM SOCKBURN TO ’STYX

The importance to manufacturers of the proposed new railway loop from Sockburn to. the Styx was briefly discussed by the council of the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association last evening. Reviewing the 10-year works plan for Canterbury, details of which were recently published. Mr B. J Masters said that the new railway in that area meant a new approach by town planners to the district concerned—because most of the area was now delineated as residential. Under the new plan, sidings would be available all along the line. Mr Masters emphasised that the 10year plan was a plan and not a programme. Importance had been placed on the idea that Canterbury was still very much dependent on the surrounding country districts. As the land at the moment needed, much care, most emphasis had been placed on the welfare of rural lands, and these jobs,, including drainage and erosion, were given first priority. Of the eity jobs, the two priority jobs in the 10-vear plan, Mr Masters said, were St. Helens Hospital and the Canterbury Agricultural College at Lincoln.
