DESTRUCTION OF GOATS
CAMPAIGN TO BEGIN IN MARLBOROUGH (P.A.) WELLINGTON, June 19. Sixty men, m two-men teams, will soon begin shooting goats in south Marlborough. This information was given by the Minister of Internal Affairs (the Hon. W. E. Parry), who said the parties would move up each side of the Inland and Seaward Kaikouras so that the goats driven down by snow and unwilling to cross the flooded rivers would have no chance- of doubling back between the parties. The same principle would be followed up the Wairau valley. Some of the parties will operate so far into the hills that the areas have been inspected by a pilot on foot to secure suitable landing places for supplies, which will be delivered by light aeroplanes.
Station owners are offering every assistance, including huts for headquarters, free pack animals, and free meat for the shooters. The last big drive in 1940 accounted for 16,000 goats, but the survivors have multiplied so rapidly that they were causing trouble by 1942. This time, it is hoped that the destruction will be so thorough that the goats will be controlled for many years.
