LARGE AMOUNTS WON

THREE OWNERS PASS £lO,OOO MARK

With six weeks of the season still remaining. three owners have won more than £lO.OOO in stakes for the season. The leader, Mr W S. Goosman, who has won £13,170. races one of the biggest teams in New Zealand, and it is divided among three ttaffiers—F. Smith, J. L. Muir, and A. Winder. His principal winners are Balgcwan, £3900, and Expanse, £3625. Mr Goosman has been a generous patron of the yearling sales at Trentham, and his success is well deserved.

Next on the list is Mr E. N. Fitzgerald, with £11,975. His brilliant stayer Golden Souvenir accounted for no less than £10,545 of this. Mr Fitzgerald, who breeds most of his own horses, was leading owner in 1940-41 with £9913, Kindergarten then being the outstanding horse he raced.

With £10,1.78, Mr P. Louis is third. He passed the £lO,OOO mark when Master Rebin won the King George Handicap at Ellerslie on King’s Birthday, and this colt has now won £3046 for the season. Master Dash is the outstanding member of Mr Louis’s team, having won £5785. Last season Mr S. S. Taylor was leading owner with £6045, while in the previous season the Hon. E. R. Davis and Mr O. Nicholson led with £9545.

Although it is some years since the leading owner topped the £lO,OOO mark, Mr Goosman’s figure does not approach that of Mr T. H. Lowry, who won £17,224 in the 1915-16 season.

When Mr G. D. Greenwood headed the list in the 1921-22 season with £15,150, three other owners also passed the £lO.OOO mark, Sir George Clifford with £11,347 being second. Mr A. B. Williams (£11,055) third, and Mr W. R. Kemball (£10,806 10s) fourth.

Although it is very unlikely that Mr Goosman will pass Mr T. H. Lowry’s record, if is possible that he may challenge Mr G. D. Greenwood’s record, being only £l9BO behind.

Up to the Weight Leigh Barton has the big weight of 9-12 to carry in the Moreton Hack Handicap at Ashburton on. Saturday, and even though he is not as sound as he could be. he is far better fitted to carry weight than most of the opposition he will meet. The fact that no allowances can be claimed with an 8-0 minimum will also be tn his favour

A Dashing Recruit The speedy Hunting Song gelding Reorapa gave a dashing display in the early stages of a school over five hurdles at Te Rapa on Tuesday morning. Reorapa jumped stylishly in the early stages to outjumo his companions; but he was steadied and the others were level with him at the last fence. Though Reorapa has yet to be raced over hurdles, great interest will attach to his appearance the first time he does so. Being by Hunting Song, one of the best sires of lumpers in New Zealand for many years. Reorapa has much in his favour, while his dam Linguist, is a half-sister to Indian Sign a brilliant but unsound lumper that is racing at present Caithness Being Schooled The plans to spell Caithness until the Rimmer have been revised, and she has been brought into work again.
