The fate of nearly 500 American operational aircraft of a total nominal value of £14,000,000 at present parked on the R.N.Z.A.F. airfield at Rukuhia. near Hamilton, is still undecided. The member of the Air Board for supply, Air Commodore S. Wallingford, in reply to an inquiry, said ftiat the future of the aircraft, which were involved in lend-lease arrangements, was the subject of negotiations still proceeding in Washington between the New Zealand and United States Governments. \ The Air Department, he added, was anxious to learn what was to become of this big fleet of unwanted warplanes which had beefi left on its hands. The aircraft were uneconomical for civilian purposes, and the reduced establishment of the peace-time Air Force had no need for them. There are 270 Corsairs, 110 Warhawks, 60 Venturas, 26 Hudsons, 19 Avengers, and 10 new-type Venturas at Rukuhia.
