SURRENDER OF COUPONS

SAVINGS FIGURES FOR WEEK “TRAGEDY OF WELLINGTON t AND AUCKLAND” (P>A.) WELLINGTON, June 18. Following are the figures for butter and meat coupons saved for the last week. They are given for the 20 chief postal districts in order of merit, based on population:—

“With some districts making remarkable efforts, the figures show a 43 per cent, increase on those of last week,” the Famine Emergency Committee states. “This week also—the tenth—the 2,000,000 mark has been passed, the grand total now being 3.125.195 coupons. f “Gisborne won for the second w r eek in succession, with a record total for any district in any 'Week based on population. The savings were equal to three coupons a /household. Fifteen districts showed increases for the week out of the total of 20, but savings figures are still being seriously affected by what has become known as the ‘tragedy of Wellington and Auckland.’ “The Whangarei district is also a large one in which the savings are nothing like comparable with its large population. The national committee feels that it cannot make its appeal to these districts urgent enough. Nothing but local patriotic spirit will bring a response. It draws attention to tne reference to food made by the GovernorGeneral in his first speech in New Zealand, when he spoke of the plight of the people of Britain and their magnificent war effort. “To give some idea of the figures, Auckland and Wellington savings are not equal to one coupon in four households each week. The lack of response of the West Coast of the South Island has been apparent from the start. Savings there are less than one coupon each week from every seven to eight households. Otherwise the figures for the week show the great result of local effort and local enthusiasm and organisation. The fats drive, which is very urgent, also made excellent headway during the week.”
