VICEREGAL (P.A.) .WELLINGTON, June 18. Their Excellencies the GovernorGeneral and Lady Freyberg, attended by members of their staff, left Wellington this afternoon by train to pay their first official visit to Auckland. Their Excellencies will return to* Wellington on Friday morning. The Rt. Rev. H. St. Barbe Holland, Bishop of Wellington, who has been appointed Dean or Norwich, handed his resignation to the standing committee' of the diocese last night, to take effect as from August 31. Bishop Holland said that he expects to sail for England shortly after that date. A new bishop will.probably be chosen at the diocesan synod, to be held on July 15.—(P.A.) Messrs A. Robertson, postmaster at Rangiora, and G. A. Wilkes, postmaster at Wellington East, have been reelected unopposed as the representatives of the staff on the Post and Telegraph Appeal Board. Mr Robertson will represent the postal side of the service and Mr Wilkes the telegraph side. Both men have had considerable experience of appeal' board work. The appointments are for a term of three years.— (P.A.)
Mr E. F. Evans, who has succeeded Mr F D. Grant as acting-district engineer of the Works Department in Christchurch, was elected to succeed Mr Grant as chairman of the No. 13 District Highways Council yesterday afternoon.
Mr D. S. Sharp. Somerfield street, has received advice that he has won the £5O sons writing competition promoted by the “New Zealand Writers’ and Composers’ Magazine.” Mr Sharp’s entry was “The Fairy Tale Parade.” which will shortly be published. He made his entry under the nom-de-plume of “Danny Boyes.”
