LYTTELTON AMALGAMATION
Sir, —At a meeting of the Lyttelton Borough Council held on June 10, Mr F. H. Heal, Deputy-Mayor, is reported to have stated “that I had since the amalgamation poll made a public statement to the effect that I intended to devote the whole of my life to bring about the amalgamation of Lyttelton with the city.” I challenge Mr Heal to state when and where I made the statement, as it is an absolute fabrication. If Mr Heal is the honest man I think he is, I feel sure that I will receive his public apology. —Yours, etc., , x , W. T. LINDSAY. Lyttelton, June 17, 1946. [“Most certainly I can answer Mr Lindsay’s rather belated challenge, and I am not without the support of witnesses,” said Cr. Heal when this letter was referred to him. “Practically the last words Mr Lindsay said when addressing the public from the steps of the Council Chamber, following the announcement of the result of the amalgamation poll were, ‘I intend to devote my whole life to this cause.’ Surely Mr Lindsay is not accusing me of being untruthful; and I do not consider that an apology on my part is necessary.”]
