U.S. AND MARS

Sir,—That schools are frequently described as military academies in the United States indicates an almost complete devotion to Mars there. Americans have done more for Mars than their children to his service, as they opened up Japan with their Navy and produced Tojo’s modem, martial Japan—a most successful missionary effort. The United States army is now doing in China what its navy did in Japan; and Japan is a small sample, compared with which China is a bulk store of martial possibilities. Future products of American military academies will be busy if the efforts of the current products of those schools in China are as fruitful as those of their predecessors were in Japan. We live and we don’t learn; and so others will die.—Yours, etc., _ „ ~ , H - J - buttle. Darfield, June 15, 1946.
