BROADCASTS OF PARLIAMENT

RESPONSIBILITY FOR CONTROL

AUSTRALIAN SPEAKER’S REFUSAL CANBERRA, June 18. The Speaker of the House of Representatives (Mr J. S. Rosevear) last

night ordered the immediate removal from his chair of the switch to control Parliamentary broadcasts. The switch, which would enable him to cut Parliamentary debates on and off the air, was part of the preparations for the start of broadcasts on June 26.

Mr Rosevear said that he refused to accept any responsibility for putting the debates on or off the air. As Speaker he was called on to be impartial. It was the duty of other people to decide what was broadcast from the House.

The president of the Senate has given similar instructions in* regard to the broadcasting of the Senate proceedings. The technicians had followed the New Zealand plan when they wired the House of Representatives, and they had placed the master switch on the Speaker’s chair. The wiring of Parliament House cost £lO,OOO. One station in each State will carry the broadcasts.
