Ruapehu Explosions

Residents in the neighbourhood of Ruapehu have seen, little of the volcano in the last few weeks, but they have noted many signs of activity. Ohakune, eight miles from the mountain in a direct line, has reported having heard several explosions through the cloud shrouding the peak. For days, too, there has been a strong smell of sulphur in the air. Clothing left out of doors overnight has been spotted with sulphur dust. From the Chateau Tongariro, 3000 ft up the northern slopes of Ruapehu, has come little news in the last few weeks: the Tourist Department staff there has been reduced to one caretaker.
