RUGBY LEAGUE TEST
ENGLAND AND N.S.W. DRAW
HUGE CROWD WATCHES MATCH
(Rec. 12.30 a.m.) SYDNEY, June 17. England and Australia drew 8-8 in the first Rugby League Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground this afternoon. Australia rallied brilliantly in the second spell after being down 6-2 at halftime. A huge crowd saw the match. England lost their centre-three-quarters, J. Kitching, who was ordered off for punching 10 minutes before half-time, but apart from this incident it was one of the cleanest Test matches on record.
England’s brilliant centre-three-quarters and captain, Risman, had to play at full-back as both the regular full-backs are on the injured list. Risman, usually a most reliable goal kick, missed many chances to-day. Australia’s captain, Jorgenson, also failed at goal kicking. McCue, England’s elusive half, was the outstanding player the field and a constant threat to Australia. Owens again gave a grand display which stamped him as one of the finest forwards ever to play for England. In the first half Horne and Whitcome scored tries for England and Jorgenson kicked a penalty goal for Australia. Bailey and Cooper scored tries for Australia in the second spell and Risman added a penalty goal for England. Cooper’s try was the most brilliant of the match. After racing along the touchline from half-way he hurled himself over the line as he was tackled by Risman.
England’s team manager (Mr W. Popplewell) said a draw was a fair reflection of the play.
