SETTLEMENT IN PERSIA
PROVINCIAL COUNCIL FOR AZERBAIJAN
TEHERAN, June 16. The Persian Cabinet approved the Azerbaijan settlement after hearing a report by Prince Firouz on his return from Tabriz.
Prince Firouz, in a broadcast, said that the Persian Central Government had met all the Azerbaijan requests. “The Azerbaijan Parliament will be dissolved and become a provincial council,” he said. It is reported that Pishevari (the Azerbaijan Democrat leader) asked the presidential committee of the Azerbaijan National Parliament to relieve him of the “heavy responsibility of Government office.” It is understood that the committee accepted his resignation, but asked. Jp on until the election of a leader of the provincial council which will reSlace the present Assembly under le agreement with the Central Government. The- committee approved the terms of the agreement. Observers in Persia consider that Dr. Salamullah Javid, Minister of the Interior in the existing “Government” of Azerbaijan, will probably become the Governor-General of the province. The newspaper, “Rabbar." organ of the Left Wing Tudeh Party, says that Ghavam Sultaneh’s Government must now have the Persian case removed from the Security Council agenda. Prince Firouz said that the Azerbaijan agreement had prevented the development of an international issue. Former Governments in Persia were responsible for the situation in Azerbaijan, because they wanted foreign interference in the country’s affairs and wanted to start a civil war. The text of the agreement says that the Azerbaijan National Army will not be disbanded, but will come under the control of the Persian Army. Kurds. Armenians, and Assyrians will be given all the privileges accorded to Azerbaijanians.
