A handsome walking stick taken to the meeting of the Riccarton Borough Council last evening by the Mayor (Mr H. S. S. Kyle) aroused as much interest in itself as did its history, related by the owner. The stick was originally presented to the Rt. Hon. W. F. Massey by the people of Northern Ireland in 1916, and he carried it when he signed the peace treaty at Versailles for New Zealand. On his death, It passed to the Rt. Hon. G. J. Coates, and it has now been presented by his family to Mr Kyle. The stick is made from Irish blackthorn, and is mounted with an embossed silver ferrule and cap. Knots where the laterals have been trimmed off occur about every inch and form an attractive spiral pattern.
