On the first of his journey to Japan, Brigadier L. Potter will leave Auckland by air this morning. Brigadier Potter, who is to take command of the 2nd N.Z.E.F. in Japan, arrived in Auckland from Wellington last night. He will travel by Tasman Empire Airways’ flying-boat to Sydney, flying thence to Melbourne and later to Brisbane. He will later complete the journey to Japan by air. Upon Brigadier Potter’s arrival in Japan, Brigadier K. L. Stewart, who at present commands the New Zealand troops there, will return to New Zealand.— (P.A.)
Lieutenant-Commander J. D. Keay, R.N.Z.N., has been appointed executive officer of H.M.N.Z.S. Philomel, Auckland. Lieutenant-Commander Keay, an old boy of the Christchurch Boys’ High School, was a member of the administrative staff of Canterbury University College before the war. and was well known in Rugby and swimming circles in Canterbury. He was a member of the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, and in the early part of the war served in. small ships in United Kingdom waters. When Japan entered the war he returned to New Zealand as resident naval officer in the Marlborough Sounds, later becoming executive officer of H.M.N.Z.S. Tasman when the Lyttelton shore station was commissioned. On the formation of the British Pacific Fleet he was appointed New Zealand liaison officer, in which capacity he dealt with the repatriation of many prisoners of war. -Recently he was transferred to the Royal New Zealand Navy.
Mr T. B. Heath, manager of the Bank of New South Wales, Wellington, since 1928, will retire on July 1, after nearly 49 years’ service with the bank in Australia and -New Zealand. Mr H. E. Holiday, who has been appointed to succeed Mr Heath, has been manager of the bank’s London branch for the last seven years. He was assistant tb the inspector for New Zealand in 1932-33. (P.A.) Mr Robert Duncan, who has been sub-accountant of the Christchurch branch of the National Bank of New Zealand, Ltd., since 1937, has been appointed manager of the Otautau branch. He has been succeeded as sub-accountant at Christchurch by Mr S Alexander.
Mr J'. T. Watts, M.P., the only nominee, has been appointed to the Canterbury University College Council to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Colonel G. J. Smith.
Captain J. L. Napier, E.D., N.Z.T.S., on whom was conferred the M.B.E. in the Birthday Honours, is a member of the Southern Military District Headquarters staff at Christchurch. Mr F. W. Creswell will arrive from Wellington to-day to preside at a meeting of the council of the New Zealand Master Bakers’ and Pastrycooks’ Association.
A motion of sympathy with the relatives of Mr F. Thorne, who was foreman for the Christchurch Domains Board, was passed at a meeting of the board yesterday.
