NEWS FOR WOMEN
CURRENT NOTES
Mrs M. Wilson, who has been matron of St. Saviour’s Girls’ Home for the last 10 months, will resign soon to be married to Captain R. Carew, of the Church Army. Notice of her resignatidn was accepted with regret at a recent meeting of the St. Saviour’s Council. The annual meeting of the North Christchurch Garden Club was held at the home of Mrs C. S. Thompson, Fitzgerald street. Prize-winners 'for the year were as follows:—cups for decorative sections: Class A, Miss M. Johnson; Class B, Mrs Quartermain; cut flowers, Miss Johnson; vegetable, Mrs Adam; highest aggregate of exhibits, Mrs G. C. Bashford and Mrs Forsythe (equal) 1. The following officers were elected:—president, Mrs N. W. Gale; vice-presidents, Mesdames E. Prendergast and A. G. Lake; secretary, Mrs A. Taylor; committee, Mesdames Flavel, Quartermain, Radley, East, and Dailey. “The' Tyndareus has recently docked with 24 cases of clothing, bedding, and household goods. I am sure I do not have to tell you how thrilled and delighted we are to receive these gifts of yours,” writes the head of the Empire and Foreign Department of the Women’s Voluntary Services, London (Mrs E. Dunbar), in a letter to the secretary of the Canterbury and Westland branch of the Lady Galway Patriotic Guild (Mrs G. Neville). “We still seem to be extremely short of things here,” the letter continues. “There is a definite feeling that whereas other countries are marching forward we are at a standstill, if indeed we are not going back-wards. I think it is perhaps because we are very tired and we feel irritable with the innumerable restrictions which seem to bind us hand and foot.” A further consignment of 17 cases was sent overseas in May by the guild, and 19 cases are at present awaiting shipment. The first white women to visit the Gobi desert, Misses M. Cable and Francesca and Eva French, who travelled by caravan across the desert five times in 15 years, will probably visit New Zealand this year. Forced out of Asia by the war, they are on a lecture tour for the British and Foreign Bible Society. They are now in Adelaide. From there they will go to Sydney, then to New Zealand, and after that they intend to start exploring the heart of India or Africa. For their work as explorers in the Gobi desert the three women have been awarded the Lawrence of Arabia medal by the Royal Geographical Society and the Livingstone medal by the Royal Scottish Geographical Society. Because some are lonely and all are keen to meet others from their own country, overseas wives of R.N.Z.A.F. personnel in Wellington are planning to form their own club. At a tea party, at which Mrs A. de T. Nevill, wife of the Chief of the Air Staff, was hostegs, the idea was fostered, aided by help from the Wellington women’s organisation known as Air Force Relations. Lady Duff, wife of the United Kingdom High Commissioner, was a special guest at the party, and there were 40 British and Canadian wives present. The brides are planning to exchange news from home, as well as rnaga-' zines, papers, and extracts from English or Canadian letters.
