PARITY WITH MOSLEMS
Congress Party’s Refusal LETTER SENT TO VICEROY (NX Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 11 p.m.) LONDON. June 14. Reuter’s correspondent in New Delhi says it is understood that the Congress Party Working Committee has sent a letter to the Viceroy (Lord Wavell), rejecting the principle of parity with the Moslem League. Renewed attempts to effect a compromise between the Congress Party and the Moslem League on the Interim government for India appear to have got nowhere, said the New Delhi correspondent of “The Times” in an earlier message. Lord Wavell saw Mr Jlnnah, president of the Moslem League, yesterday. The meeting was apparently cordial and constructive, but any hope emerging from it was dashed when the Viceroy received Pandit Nehru, presidentelect of the Congress Party, who professed his inability to carry the Congress Working Committee with him on the suggested compromise. Evidently, said the correspondent, progress is blocked by an obdurate majority on the committee who are not prepared to make the slightest concession on the ijsue of parity of representation on the Viceroy’s Cabinet, even if a formula is devised which, in effect, would give the Congress Party a majority wnile assuring the Moslems of adequate representation. The Congress Party’s Working Committee ended its session with the comment by Dr. Azad: “We are still where we were.”
