EMPIRE PRESS CABLE RATE
(Rec. 8 p.m.) LONDON, June 11. “The Times,” in a leading article, says: “The announcement by the Post-master-General (the Earl of Listowel) that the penny a word Empire press rate is to be permanent is of fundamental importance to all newspapers. Security is in this manner obtained for the dominant material factor of
limiting the heavy cost of telegraphing news over great distances, which has troubled the press ever since the first cables were laid. “Cable and Wireless. Ltd., who at considerable cost to themselves loyally executed the Government’s war-time policy, had made no suggestion of restoring the higher pre-war charges, but with the approaching nationalisation of their service doubt again arose pending the announcement of the Government’s intentions. “New certainty is now given to the long-term planning in which all Empire newspapers are engaged.”
